The Media Consortium is a North American network of over 75 independent news outlets, collectively reaching over 100 million people a day. Our member outlets are multiplatform—online, in print, and on the air. Prominent members include Mother Jones, The Nation, Democracy Now!, Orion, Ms. Magazine, AlterNet and Grist.
The Media Consortium’s annual conference is the only trade conference most of their staff attend. We expect 150 attendees, all decision makers—either Executive Directors, CEOs, Publishers, Producers or Editors. They look to this conference to set their planning for the year to come.
As we celebrate 10 years, The Media Consortium will use this conference to look forward as well as back. The Black Lives Matter movement has created a significant opportunity to reframe what it means to be an “independent” news outlet—but grasping that opportunity means that outlets must both diversify their staff and adopt a race equity lens.
To take advantage of this moment, the Media Consortium is dedicating our conference to race equity. February 19 will be given over to a full-day training designed to provide participants with practical tools, skills and strategies for addressing structural racism. The outcome we aim for is that news outlets will approach all their work—edit and business—with a racial equity lens.
